UWIAATT Distinguished Alumni Awards

The UWI Alumni Association (T&T Chapter) held its 2nd Distinguished Alumni Awards on Thursday 20 February at the Teaching & Learning Complex, UWI, St. Augustine. Twenty-five (25) alumni received awards including a special Pelican Award to Sir Edwin Carrington.

The UWIAATT is backing 'Team Hope'!

Team Hope is a unique, community-based fundraising and advocacy programme, whose theme is 'How ordinary people do extra-ordinary things'. Funds raised from Team Hope will aid in advancing Occupational Therapy (OT) services for the public. OT helps persons with a physical, mental or development conditions (for example from a stroke or disability) perform the daily living and work skills that many of us take for granted.

It is estimated that at least 10% of the Trinidad and Tobago population, who currently live with a disability can be remediated or the disability prevented if therapy services were readily available.

Through Team Hope, a fundraising athlete is paired with a person who has used OT services. Each athlete is required train for a period of 7 months and complete the Rainbow Cup International Triathlon held in Tobago in June 2014. During this 7 month period each athlete is required to raise $5000 for OT activities. Funds raised in previous years have seen the expansion of the Caribbean Kids & Families Therapy Organisation (CKFTO).

This year, the UWIAATT has raised the bar. A member of the UWIAATT Executive, Ms. Arlene Hamblin, has already begun training and fund raising towards this event. The UWIAATT hopes to support Arlene both financially and by promoting awareness of Occupational Therapy in Trinidad and Tobago.

Support the UWIAATT and Team Hope initiative! Call or email us for more information. Pledges can also be made to the UWIAATT Office located at the UWIAATT building, opposite the tennis courts on the St. Augustine campus.

We thank you for your support in this venture as the UWIAATT continues to give back to our community.

President's Message 2014

Dear Alum,

As we begin a new year your executive wishes to thank you for your support in the year past and look forward to your even greater involvement in 2014.

The year 2013 was a challenging one for the Association but we have been able to rally through. It has seen also the introduction on the St. Augustine campus of the Alumni Affairs office. We are aware based on inquiries that some of you expressed some concerns about clarification of the two bodies.

Simply stated the Alumni Association is a member organisation that caters for all graduates of the UWI regardless of campus. Hence Chapters are country based such like Trinidad and Tobago.

The email address that was used by the Association which was campus based is now that of the Alumni Affairs office. The Associations new email address is trinidad.tobago@alumni.uwi.edu. We are committed to working with the Finance and Alumni Affairs Unit and we will continue our monthly joint meetings started last year. We have agreed to support each other’s projects and to host some jointly.

Our focus this year will be to build on our strengths and successes of the past, improve our new website, add new membership benefits, increase membership and appeal to you our member to give back with your time and purse.

The Alumni meeting room now host our office, located in front of campus security and opposite the tennis court. We trust this will be much more convenient for you to visit and be served by the office administrator Ms Cherise Sanchez. The office hours are Monday-Thursday 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Fridays 9:30 a.m.to 1:30 p.m.

On behalf of the Executive, we wish you and yours a peaceful and prosperous 2014 and we look forward to serving you throughout the year.

Cheridan Woodruffe
President

2013

UWIAATT Fees have increased

At the Annual General Meeting held on April 6th 2013, approval was given for the revision of UWIAA membership fees as follows:
  • Annual membership now $100
  • Life membership now $1000.
This increase was justified on the basis that the current fee structure has not changed for over 12 years, while the cost of maintaining an office continues to escalate. Major recurrent expenses include cost of hiring support staff, purchase of computers, hosting of various seminars and student-related programs and donations to several arms of the University.

Creation of a Tobago Chapter

The UWIAATT is seeking to further engage Tobago in the Association's activities! Join us as we engage UWI Alumni from Tobago and residing in Tobago in upcoming events and activities in the sister isle. We will keep you updated.
